United States Senators from Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas sent a letter on February 20, 2013 to the Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to request an extension to the comment period and the final determination date for Fish and Wildlife’s proposed listing of the Lesser Prairie Chicken as a threatened species.  The letter requests 60 additional days for public comment, and six additional months before a listing determination is made.  The authors assert such extensions would provide an opportunity to state wildlife agencies to submit a range-wide conservation plan, and would allow more time for approval of Candidate Conservation Agreements with Assurances, all of which may lead to a “not warranted” decision by Fish and Wildlife.  The current deadline for comments is March 11, 2013, and a determination is currently anticipated by September 30, 2013.
